Publishing your files
Secure FTP Settings
- With Secure FTP the ID, password and content are encrypted as they travel over the internet.
- Secure FTP access is restricted to the wisc.edu domain. If using an off campus IP# or the UW wireless Please see Virtual Private Network information
- You can download a free Secure FTP client on the DoIT Shelf: Windows/Secure FX -- OR -- Mac/Fugu

UserID: The userID is the orgname in your URL: orgname.rso.wisc.edu |
Password: We are instructed by the SOO office to only send passwords to the organizational contact listed in the SOO/RSO directory. Then it's up to the main org contact to decide who in the org should have it. To get the password for an RSO site have the organizational contact email us at:

Host Directory: Dreamweaver users specify HTML -- Other FTP clients can leave blank or specify HTML to be place directly into your web document folder. |
Transfer all HTML files as "text" or "ascii"
Transfer all image files as "raw data" or "binary"
Many FTP clients have automatic detection of the file type |

- The home page or the one you want readers to see first for a folder/directory must be called index.html, index.htm or if using SSI: index.shtml
- Be careful about using case in your file names. The Linux/Apache server is case sensitive. If you are inconsistent about case between your URLs and your file names, the system will not find the files.
- Don't include spaces or other special characters in your file names. Please name your directories and files using the following characters:
- a-z A-Z 0-9 . _ - (don't use - as the first character in the directory or filename)
- As you write your HTML, be sure to use relative links when referring to files or anchors within your filesystem.
