Hosting requirements

Hosting requirements and options vary depending on what kind of site you have.

Dynamic applications are connected to a database and allow users to interact with content. It’s common for dynamic sites to use a Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla.

Static sites show the same content to everyone unless the site developer makes changes. They only consist of client-side languages, such as HTML, CSS, or JavaScript.

Hosting options

For static websites, we offer two different hosting options. If you’re unsure which one you need, please visit our help documentation to learn more.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) with a Content Delivery Network (CDN)

You’ll be given access to a Git repository where you can store 5 GB of static files, like images and CSS. When you deploy your site, our automated pipeline uses a CDN to deliver those files to your website, making it faster and more reliable during outages.

Traditional on-premise Apache server hosting

Sites are hosted on a server on campus. (Mention CCI) You’ll use a Web Administration Control Panel called Plesk to manage and control your website, and Secure FTP access to upload and publish your site. This is ideal for NetID login and other functions that require Apache.

WiscWeb WordPress Service

If you don't already have a static website ready, you might consider checking out the WiscWeb WordPress service. It's built using the  UW Theme (UW-Madison’s official WordPress theme), and is also available for free. This option is usually easier and less demanding if you want to create a website with UW branding.

The platform you choose for hosting your site will determine which technologies you can use. If you're unsure, it's a good idea to seek advice from your developer or refer to the documentation of the web framework you’re using (eg. WordPress, Django, Ruby on Rails).

Authentication options

NetID authentication

We can configure your site so that specific parts of your site require a valid UW-Madison NetID and password to access. We cannot assign specific NetIDs to access particular resources - this must be set up by your developer. Web Hosting also provides support for Manifest Group protections.

Wisconsin Federated login (requires additional approval)

We can set up websites to use Wisconsin Federation login, which allows users from various UW System schools (UW-Eau Claire, UW-Green Bay, etc) to use their campus login credentials to access your site. This option requires additional approval.

Restricted data

You are required to inform Web Hosting if you intend to handle restricted data, including information that may be considered sensitive (e.g., student grades, enrollment status) or restricted (e.g., social security numbers, credit card information). We have a dedicated environment for our Platinum plan with additional security measures to protect this type of data.

If your site deals with restricted data, it will undergo a review process and consultation before approval. For information about your responsibilities, visit UW System’s Information Security policy. Please note that our service is not fully HIPAA compliant, but de-identified protected health information is allowed.

Your web account will be configured to reside on our designated restricted data platform. We'll set up individual accounts for the Plesk Web Admin Panel, Secure FTP, and remote MySQL access.

We use fire-walled dedicated IPs for each site that resides on a restricted data subnet to restrict access to individual developers. Any developers who will require administrative access will need to supply us with their static WiscVPN IP(s).

Will your website have e-commerce or accept payments of any kind?(Required)

Yes

Financial information, like credit or debit card numbers, is classified as restricted data. To comply with the Office of Cybersecurity’s Restricted Data Security Standards, all sites that use CashNet to handle payments must be hosted on our Platinum plan.

In order to ensure Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance, you are not allowed to store payment information on UW-Madison servers. Customers looking to make a purchase on your site will be redirected to a CashNet payment page to enter their payment details. After completing their order, they will be sent back to your site.

Since your site will handle restricted data, it must be hosted on a restricted data platform with our Platinum service level.

Details

Monthly fees are waived for internal DoIT customers.

For the Platinum service level, we'll create separate accounts for everyone with administrative access, assign unique IP addresses to each site for isolation, and use firewalls to restrict access to authorized developers only.

Developers who require admin access will need to supply us with their static WiscVPN IP(s), which can be requested free of charge.

External developers will need to request a NetID from your department's HR. If they have a static IP assignment from their ISP or place of business, we can also safe-list that address.

* Gold and Platinum levels have up to 8 domains by default, and can request unlimited domains for an additional monthly cost or bundle pricing.

Do you anticipate needing more disk storage than what's included for your service level?(Required)

We can add storage at the base rate of $5 per 1 GB per year. If you require a large amount of additional storage, we can implement a sliding storage rate or provide advice about other available options.

Additional contacts

If an external (non-UW) vendor doesn't have a NetID, you will need to work with your department's HR to obtain a NetID for them.

If your site has restricted data and requires static WiscVPN assignments, we can safe-list a vendor's static IP from their ISP or place of business.

Each Web Hosting account owner must either have a Developer on their team or continued access to an external vendor who will be able to complete testing, ongoing maintenance, troubleshooting, and security updates. Please review our Division of Responsibilities for more information.
