If you want to use multiple hosting platforms or funding sources, you’ll need to request a new account.

Domain names

Decide on a domain name. You can transfer an existing domain or create a new one.

Domain limits

Additional domain totals are capped for each service level. If you need more domains than your current service level allows, contact webhosting@doit.wisc.edu for recommendations or upgrades.

Additionally, consider checking out the WiscWeb WordPress service. It's built using the UW Theme, and is also available for free. This option is usually easier and less demanding if you want to create a website with UW branding.

Must register domain with a third-party vendor

Please note that domains other than ".wisc.edu" or ".wisconsin.edu" must be registered with a third-party service (e.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.). For more information, visit the DNS Registration FAQ

Site purpose and scope(Required)

Please enter a short description of your site and its intended audience. (i.e., What department is it in? Who will be using it?)

Restricted data

You are required to inform Web Hosting if you intend to handle restricted data, including information that may be considered sensitive (e.g., student grades, enrollment status) or restricted (e.g., social security numbers, credit card information). We have a dedicated environment for our Platinum service level with additional security measures to protect this type of data.

If your site deals with restricted data, it will undergo a review process and consultation before approval. For information about your responsibilities, visit UW System’s Information Security policy.

Your web account will be configured to reside on our designated restricted data platform. We'll set up individual accounts for the Plesk Web Admin Panel, Secure FTP, and remote MySQL access.

We use fire-walled dedicated IPs for each site that resides on a restricted data subnet to restrict access to individual developers. Any developers who will require administrative access will need to supply us with their static WiscVPN IP(s).

Will your website have e-commerce or accept payments of any kind?(Required)

Restricted financial information

Financial information, like credit or debit card numbers, is classified as restricted data. To ensure Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance, you are not allowed to store payment information directly on UW-Madison servers.

In order to comply with the Office of Cybersecurity’s Restricted Data Security Standards, all sites that have e-commerce must use CashNet to handle payments and be hosted on restricted servers, available on our Platinum service level. Customers looking to make a purchase on your site will be redirected to a CashNet payment page to enter their payment details. After completing their order, they will be sent back to your site.

Restricted data

It is your responsibility to comply with Restricted Data Security Standards.

If your application stores, processes, transmits, handles, or otherwise accesses restricted data without the DoIT Shared Hosting team's knowledge, you will likely be held personally responsible in the event of a data breach.
